Giants Desperately Cling to a Wild Card Spot
The San Francisco Giants are still in the running for a postseason position, even though they are now 13.5 games back in the NL West. At 69-63, the SF Giants are 2nd in the NL West, 6th in the National League, and 12th in the MLB. They have a decent chance to be a Wild Card in the NL, and after winning 3-straight, their confidence is growing. In their last 10 (5-5) the Giants averaged 4.6 runs, 8.9 hits, 1.0 home runs, and 4.8 runs against. They are 3-3 against the Padres this season, and are 0-2 in San Diego.
The Padres are 7.5 games back from the Giants in the NL West with a 62-71 overall record. San Diego made big strides last season, but are following it up with a flop. The Padres won just 3 of their last 10, averaging 3.7 runs, 7.4 hits, 1.4 home runs, and 4.8 runs against. San Diego has one of the best defenses in the MLB, allowing the 2nd-fewest runs (543) in the NL, but they’ve been stagnant at the plate. The Padres lineup is stacked, and their numbers are decent, but they can’t seem to finish in crunch time.
