Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros: Prediction and Betting Tips

By Sam Batz

cubs vs astros

The MLB season continues to churn as we are now a quarter of the way through the regular season. Favorites have emerged, but there’s still plenty of baseball to be played, and on Tuesday, May 16th the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros will face off in an NL versus AL showdown (8:10 PM EST, TBS/MLB.TV). Tuesday’s matchup will be the 2nd of a 3 game series, with the 1st game taking place on Monday, May 15th. The Astros are the home team and the favorites, with a -1.5 run spread and a moneyline priced at -210. The Cubs are +1.5 run underdogs, and will look to overcome the odds on the road against Houston.

The Chicago Cubs (+1.5; ML +175)

The Chicago Cubs are 19-21 (47.5%) through the first quarter of the season. The Cubs are 3rd in the NL Central, 9th in the National League, and are tied for 15th in the MLB with the Cleveland Guardians. Chicago went 4-6 in their last 10 games, and are coming off 2 horrendous losses against the Minnesota Twins where the Cubs scored just 4 combined runs and gave up 27 in back-to-back blowout losses. Consistency has been an issue for the Cubs who are right in the middle of the MLB standings, but they are expected to start Justin Steele on Tuesday. The Cubs have been very consistent with Steele on the mound, going 6-2 in games he has started, and allowing just 2.4 runs per game.

The Houston Astros (-1.5; ML -210)

The Astros are 21-19 (52.5%) this season. The reigning Champs are performing below expectations, and after going 106-56 (65.4%) on their way to their 2nd World Series title, Houston is projected to finish 91-71 (56.2%), a significant drop from last year. The Astros are 2nd in the AL West, 8th in the American League, and 13th in the MLB. They went 5-5 in their last 10 games, and are coming off a 2-1 series victory over the Chicago White Sox. Houston’s strength lies in their defense, as they allow just 3.7 runs per game, but they rank near the bottom in runs scored, which will be an issue against the Cubs on Tuesday.

Cubs vs. Astros Prediction

Take the underdog Chicago Cubs to beat the Astros on Tuesday. Chicago’s undefeated left-handed pitcher, Justin Steele, will be on the mound to collect his 7th win of the season. Steele has been fantastic thus far, and against an Astros team averaging a middling 8.0 hits per game, the Cubs will clean-up on Tuesday. Chicago averages 9.2 hits and has the 4th-best batting average in the MLB. Houston’s pitching and fielding have been great, as they allow just 3.7 runs per game, but their batting has been underwhelming and the Astros will struggle against a pitcher like Justin Steele.

Prediction: Chicago Cubs Moneyline (+175)
