The Arizona Diamondbacks are quite possibly the most surprising team in Major League Baseball this season. This team opened the season expected to be in the bottom three worst teams in the league, as shown by the fact that they had the third worst odds to make the playoffs, and yet, here, roughly 35 games into this season, they have a winning record. Additionally, had it not been for the fact that they are in the NL West Division, they would be in second place in most other divisions. They are only 1.5 games behind of the final National League Wild Card spot, coming off a 110-loss season, the success of the team in the early going has been one of the big surprises in Major League Baseball so far.

Pitching has been their key to success this season as they currently rank fifth in the MLB in ERA+, but what they need to address is their hitting, as they have the sixth worst offense according to OPS+. Two other key stats that have brought the Diamondbacks where they are this season has been Outs Above Average, in which they rank top five, but rank poorly in fielding percentage. 

A huge piece of Arizona’s success this season has been Zac Gallen, who they acquired from the Miami Marlins in 2019. While they did give up Jazz Chisholm in that trade who is a star for Miami, Gallen is developing into a true ace talent. Through five starts in 2022, he has a 0.95 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP. He’s also currently tied for ninth among all pitchers in fWAR (1.0), and his 3.7% walk rate is 10th among the 135 pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings this season. 

The Cubs are 11-20 on the year, and have only won 3 of their last 10 games, and won’t get a win here either.
