Can San Diego’s Defense Stop Baltimore?
The Baltimore Orioles have had a dream of a season. The American League leaders are 72-45, making them one of three teams in the MLB with a win-rate above 60%. The Orioles won 6 of their last 10 games, and are coming off a 1-0 victory over Seattle, ending the Mariners 8-game winning streak. Consistency has been the name of the game in Baltimore, and while the Orioles may not lead the MLB with the most runs or the best ERA, they rarely suffer multi game losing streaks, and more often than not find a way to win.
The San Diego Padres are 10th in the National League, and with a 56-61 record, the Padres have 16 fewer wins than the Orioles. San Diego went 4-6 in their last 10, averaging 5.2 runs, 8.8 hits, and 1.5 home runs per game. The Padres numbers aren’t bad, but they’ve failed to consistently win games. In that way, they are the polar opposite of the Orioles. Defense and pitching have been San Diego’s saving grace however, as they lead the NL with the fewest runs against (478), and post the 5th-best ERA in the MLB at 3.81. The Padres face a tough test against Baltimore’s batting, but I feel good about San Diego’s chances in this one.
