Braves Rounding to Form?

Let’s just say that the Atlanta Braves, under this season with high expectations is an understatement. To say that this season hasn’t gone according to those expectations is also another statement. The Braves, who entered the year as favorites to win the National League East Division, are now nine whole games behind the Mets, but things are looking up for them as they are the winners of five in a row and seven of their last ten. Could this finally be the Atlanta Braves playing at the level that they should be as the defending World Series champions? While it does look like this team is getting better, I’m not going to jump to the conclusion that the Braves are all of a sudden back in the form that they were last season and the form that we all expected. 

 

First, we have to look closer at who exactly the Braves have beaten in this five game winning streak. They beat the Arizona Diamondbacks and then went on to sweep the Colorado Rockies and their four game series. These two teams are at the bottom of their division as they are both in the National League West, and the D backs are four games out of .500, and the Rockies are an even worse, eight games under .500. So while this winning streak is good for the Braves, we can’t jump to the conclusion that everything has turned around for them. 

 

Lucky for the Braves, their opponent, the Oakland Athletics, are one of the few teams even worse than the Dbacks or Rockies. Oakland is 16 games under .500, and will be starting Jared Koenig, who is making his major league debut today. A pitcher making their debut won’t be enough to overcome the A’s struggles behind the plate where they rank 30th in the league.
