Bottom Teams Battle

The Rockies and Dbacks have met up 10 times to this point in the season. The Rockies have taken 6 of those 10 matchups, including 5 of the last 6 games. The Diamondbacks are still favored despite this for a couple reasons. The first is that despite the fact that Arizona has only a 1 game lead over Colorado for last place in the division, they have been a better team overall this year. The expectations for them before the season were virtually nothing so the fact that they won even 46 games to this point is surprising.

Tonight’s pitching matchup is between Jose Urena of the Rockies and Zach Davies of the Diamondbacks. Neither has been stellar this season as they both have ERAs north of 4.25, and neither has a WHIP below 1.20. Both will be wanting to pick up a win to boost their subpar record of 1-3 for Urena and 2-4 for Davies. Urena have his best outing in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Padres, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings as the Rockies fell 3-2. The right-hander continues to struggle with his control. Urena has issued multiple free passes in all six of his starts for Colorado since joining the club at the beginning of July, leading to a rough 4.94 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 17:16 K:BB through 31 innings. The 30-year-old isn’t exactly solidifying his spot in the rotation, but the Rockies also don’t seem to have any better options.

Zach’s last outing wasn’t stellar either as he gave up four runs on three hits and two walks over two-plus innings. Two of the hits Davies allowed left the yard, including an Amed Rosario two-run blast to left-center field that chased the right-hander from the game with nobody out in the third inning. It was an inauspicious return to the rotation for Davies, who missed all of July with a shoulder issue.
