Boston Is Surging But Remain Last In Their Division
The Boston Red Sox are 48-43, but are last place in the AL East, 9.0 games behind the division leading Rays. It’s the toughest division in baseball, but after winning 8 of their last 10 games before the All-Star break, Boston is the hottest team in the American League. Averaging 4.9 runs per game, the Red Sox are in the top-10 for runs scored, but are in the bottom-10 for runs against, giving up 4.7 runs per game. Having won 5 straight, Boston will enter their matchup against Chicago with increased confidence.
The Chicago Cubs are 42-47, putting them in 10th place in the National League. The Cubs went 5-5 in their last 10 before the All-Star break, averaging 5.1 runs per game over that same stretch. On the season as a whole, the Cubs average 4.6 runs per game and 4.3 runs against, making their matchup with Boston a fairly evenly matched game. Unfortunately, Chicago has struggled with consistency, winning just 48.8% of the time at home this season.
I like the Boston Red Sox in this one. It will be a close game, but even though they are coming out of the All-Star break, Boston’s current form will propel them to victory over the Cubs. The Red Sox may be last in their division, but they are 5.0 games up on the Cubs in the overall standings, and will increase that lead on Friday.
So for our Red Sox vs. Cubs expert pick, take the Red Sox to win on Friday.
