Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays: Analysis, Prediction, and Betting Tips

orioles vs rays

The MLB season continues on Wednesday, June 21st with a highly anticipated matchup between the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays (12:10 PM EST, Bally Sports/Mid-Atlantic Sports Network/MLB Extra Innings). Baltimore and Tampa are two of the American League’s top teams, and will face-off for the 5th time this season on Wednesday. The Rays were the hottest team in baseball at the start of the season but have since cooled off, while the Orioles have begun to heat up in recent weeks. The Rays are No. 1 and the Orioles are No. 2 in the AL East, giving their matchup a little extra flare. Baltimore is looking to close the gap, while Tampa Bay will look to keep their spot atop the standings.

The Baltimore Orioles  (+1.5; ML +125)

Baltimore is 44-27 (62.0%), 5.0 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. They have a chance to cut that down to 3.0 games if they win both matchups of the short 2-game series against Tampa. As I write this, the Orioles are currently leading the Rays 7-4 in the bottom of the 6th in the first game. Tampa is tough to beat at home, but it looks like the Orioles could get it done.

Baltimore is 2nd in the AL East, 3rd in the American League, and 4th in the MLB. They are projected to finish with a 88-74 record, giving them a 54% chance to reach the postseason. But that’s a long way off, and Baltimore will be solely focused on beating their division rivals on Wednesday.

The Tampa Bay Rays (-1.5; ML -150)

The Tampa Bay Rays remain the best team in the MLB. Despite going 5-5 in their last 10 games and losing back-to-back matchups, the Rays maintain their grip atop the standings, and are the only team with 50+ wins thus far on the season. With a 51-24 (68.0%) record, the Rays are 1st in the AL East, 1st in the American League, and 1st in the MLB.

They lead the league with the fewest runs allowed (279), and are 2nd for the most runs (416), giving them a massively impressive run differential of +137. The Rays win over 80% of the time at home, and are 47-18 (72.3%) as favorites, giving them a clear advantage over the Orioles, whom Tampa Bay will be expected to beat on Wednesday.

Orioles vs. Rays Prediction

Take Tampa Bay to beat Baltimore on Wednesday, June 21st. The Orioles will give them some trouble, but because of the numbers Tampa Bay is posting at home, I have to go with the Rays. They are averaging 5.84 runs per game in Tampa and have lost just 7 times out of the 38 home games they’ve played thus far. The Orioles face a tough task ahead, and although they won 2 out of 3 games against the Rays in their first series, that was in Baltimore, which is not the same as facing Tampa Bay in Tampa. With the support of the home crowd and the confidence the Rays have exuded all season, take Tampa Bay to win on Wednesday.

Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-150)
