Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees
By Sam Batz
On Friday, April 21st the New York Yankees will host the Toronto Blue Jays for their first matchup of the new season (7:05 PM EST, Apple TV+). The Yankees lead the Blue Jays by half a game in the AL East, but New York and Toronto are evenly matched sides. The Blue Jays are coming off a three-game series against the Houston Astros, where they went 1-2. The Yankees are finishing up a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels, and will play the final game of the series the day before facing Toronto. Friday’s matchup will be an entertaining spectacle between division rivals that are both expected to make the playoffs.
The Toronto Blue Jays (ML +105)
Toronto is 11-8 (57.9%) through the first month of the season. They are 4th in the highly competitive AL East, 6th in the American League, and 12th overall. The Blue Jays have about a 61% chance to make the playoffs for the second-consecutive season, but need to start scoring more runs. In their most recent series, they faced the Astros in three games, but scored just 7 total runs. Toronto’s defense/pitching was also lacking, giving up 19 runs for a scoring differential of -12, which won’t fly against the better teams in the league, like the NY Yankees.
The New York Yankees (ML -115)
The Yankees are 11-7 (61.1%) so far this season, just barely edging out the Blue Jays in the standings. New York is tied for 2nd in the AL East, tied for 3rd in the American League, and tied for 8th overall. The Yankees rank in the bottom-half of the league for runs scored, but are playing excellent defense, giving up just 3.1 runs per game to opponents. In fact, the Yankees have allowed just 56 total runs against them, the 3rd fewest in the MLB. New York has a 80% chance to make the playoffs for the 7th straight season, and if they continue to limit their opponents, they will be a favorite to win it all.

Blue Jays vs. Yankees Prediction
Take the New York Yankees to win. The Blue Jays struggled to score against the Astros in their previous series, and now face an even tougher defense in the Yankees. New York’s starting Center Fielder, Aaron Judge, is coming off a huge game against the Angels, where he robbed Shohei Ohtani of a home run, then turned around and hit one himself. It was a much needed boost for Judge and the Yankees, who face the Angels Thursday night before the Blue Jays fly into town. Toronto, who allows 5.2 runs per game, will struggle to keep Judge off the stat sheet, and the Yankees will take home the win Friday night.
Prediction: New York Yankees Moneyline (-115)
