BASEBALL PICKS & PREVIEW — MINNESOTA TWINS AT BOSTON RED SOX 7/21
It could be a trip down the hill for the Boston Red Sox from this point forward, rather than a hard, uphill climb. Or maybe not. The Beantowners are now in sole possession of first place in the American League East, but there could be some trouble on the horizon for this team as it heads into the first of a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins, set to begin at 7:10 PM ET at Fenway Park. The Red Sox are 53-39 and overtook the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East race by winning a wild one at Fenway on Wednesday. Hanley Ramirez had perhaps the best day of his career, hitting three homers with six RBI’s as the BoSox scored their second straight win over the San Francisco Giants, with an 11-7 final. Drew Pomeranz made his debut for Boston in this one, and he will have to improve on that performance if he is going to be a factor for this team in the pennant race. Pomeranz gave up eight hits and five earned runs in his stint, which ended with two outs in the fourth inning.
While the starting staff may be fortified, in the final analysis, with the addition of Pomeranz, the bullpen is having some trouble of a more immediate variety. Carson Smith, who was acquired in the off-season from Seattle, has been lost for the season to injury; Craig Kimbrel had knee surgery on July 11, and while he is playing catch at the moment, he is not expected to be available for about three weeks. Koji Uehara has now torn a pectoral muscle and he has been put on the disabled list. Uehara’s absence is said to be particularly troubling because he was able to get hitters out from both sides of the plate. He was especially murderous against left-handed batters, holding them to a .169 average.
Boston goes with Steve Wright, the knuckleballers who is 11-5 with a 2.78 ERA. Minnesota counters with Tyler Duffey (5-6, 5.23 ERA). These two met up with each other on June 10, with the Red Sox prevailing behind Wright’s brilliant pitching performance.
In the baseball betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Red Sox are big favorites (home team on bottom):
Minnesota Twins (Duffey – R) +188
Boston Red Sox (Wright – R) -206
Over 10 Runs -115
Under 10 Runs -105
Twins +1.5 Runs -105
Red Sox -1.5 Runs -115
Wright has actually been slumping lately, giving up 15 runs in his last 21-2/3 innings of work. Out of his last four starts, the most recent one against the Yankees was probably the best, as he gave up three runs over six innings. He had a great effort against these Twins on June 10, going 7-1/3 innings without giving up an earned run.
His opposite number on that occasion was Duffey, who has been a bright spot for the last-place Twins (35-59) of late. They have, in fact, won the last five games he has started, even though they have admittedly not all been stellar efforts. Last time out he left after 6-1/3 innings against the Indians, having allowed four runs and six hits.
