BASEBALL ODDS & PREVIEW SAN FRAN GIANTS AT NY YANKEES 7/22
The New York Yankees have been playing some pretty good baseball – among their best of the year – of late, and so they understandably have some things they can feel confident about going into Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. With four wins in their last five contests, they still have a chance to make a move down the stretch and get into the post-season. And that will make the decision as to whether to “buy” or “sell” at the trade deadline that much more difficult. One team that knows exactly what it is going to do is the San Francisco Giants, who have won three World Series in recent years under manager Bruce Bochy, which means they don’t lose their composure after five straight defeats, which is the streak they are on right now. These teams will get together at Yankee Stadium in a game that is set to begin at 7:10 PM ET. Even though they took a 4-1 loss on Thursday, the Yankees have recently climbed over the .500 mark, as they are at 48-47, which places them seven games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East and 5.5 games out of the second wild card slot. They have a demanding customer base, so there might be some pressure on them to hold onto a pitcher like, say, Aroldis Chapman or Andrew Miller, rather than deal him. If this team can just get more consistency out of the starting rotation, they can get to the point in games where they can go with their three flame-throwers, all of whom are capable of putting “lights out.”
The Giants are 57-38 after these five straight losses – three in San Diego and one in Boston. They are four games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. On Friday they will go with Madison Bumgarner, who is 10-5 with a 2.12 ERA but did not have the kind of outing he was hoping for at Petco Park last time. The Yankees send Masahiro Tanaka to the hill. He was sizzling against the Red Sox in his last trip.
In the baseball odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Giants are the slight favorites with the All-Star lefty on the mound:
San Francisco Giants (Bumgarner – L) -108
New York Yankees (Tanaka – R) -102
Over 7.5 Runs -110
Under 7.5 Runs -110
Giants -1.5 Runs +150
Yankees +1.5 Runs -170
It would appear that the Giants got a much-needed day off on Thursday, and they were pounded by the Red Sox’ bats in Wednesday’s game. And Hanley Ramirez in particular did a real job on them, as he hit three homers in the 11-7 victory. San Francisco has hit .237 during this current five-game losing streak, and Tanaka is coming off a six-inning stretch against Boston where he gave up just one run on three hits. Really, all a starting pitcher really has to do is put in six solid innings in order to get to the bullpen.
Bumgarner is a guy who is a threat to go the distance nearly every time out, and that minimizes the effect of the San Francisco bullpen, which is 18th in the majors in ERA. He was virtually unhittable, going the full route, allowing just two Arizona D-Backs to reach base, and striking out 14. It was brilliant.
And he can hit too. Bumgarner hit five homers in 2014, four more last year and has two so far in 2016. He batted for himself on June 30 against Oakland, an American League city where National League teams are allowed to use the designated hitter. Bochy has said that he will likely use the DH here, because of the heat, because he doesn’t want to leave Bumgarner on the field unnecessarily.
