BASEBALL BETTING — SABATHIA TRIES TO STEER SHIP STRAIGHT VS. ANGELS
The New York Yankees had to go much of the 2014 season without CC Sabathia, who they had signed to a $161 million contract before the 2009 campaign and still owe $50 million to as a result of an extension. He made only eight starts last season before his season ended with a knee injury. Now many Yankee fans probably wish he’d never have made an appearance with the club this year.
Sabathia’s ERA is all blown up at the moment, at 5.65, and on Monday night he will enter the fray against the team he last scored a victory over – the Los Angeles Angels – in baseball betting action that is slated to begin at 10:05 PM ET at Angele Stadium in Anaheim.
Sabathia has come out of his last three starts with a no-decision, and in those games he has allowed 13 earned runs in 15-2/3 innings. He beat the Angels on June 7 with a very credible performance in the Bronx, allowing just two runs over six innings. So it hasn’t all been terrible. But the fact is, only three starting pitchers in the AL who qualify (with enough innings) have a higher earned run average then he does.
In the baseball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports , the Angles are the favorites behind another high-priced hurler, CJ Wilson:
Los Angeles Angels (Wilson) -135
New York Yankees (Sabathia) +125
Under 8 runs -110
Over 8 runs -100
Sabathia is at that stage where he is willing to try anything. And so he told reporters (not jokingly either) that he was ready to throw submarine-style to see if that might provide an answer. He may have followed through on that had he not had the advice and counsel of Andy Pettitte, the former Yankee southpaw who has been in regular communication with him and has tried to talk him through this difficult season. Pettitte is not suggesting any radical changes, and he may be right, since at least control doesn’t;t seem to be a big problem for Sabathia at the moment. In fact, his ratio of strikeouts to walks is actually pretty strong (78 to 17).
BetAnySportscustomers know that Sabathia and Wilson opposed each other on June 7. Wilson got roughed up, allowing six runs in seven innings, including three homers. He followed that up with two very good efforts against the A’s and D-Backs (combined one run on ten hits in 15 innings) and then was lit up again by the Houston Astros (seven runs before he had to leave in the fourth). He has actually yielded more earned runs over his last five starts than Sabathia has.
The Angels have started to pick things up a bit, winning four of their last six and moving past Texas into second place in the American League West. They trail the Astros by four games, and two games separate them from the Yankees in the wild card race. New York is in a battle in the AL East, where Baltimore and Tampa Bay are in a virtual tie at the top, with the Yankees a half-game back, and themselves just a half-game ahead of Toronto.
