BASEBALL BETTING ODDS — SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS AT BOSTON RED SOX 7/20/16
The questions abound as the San Francisco Giants play the second of their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. One of them, of course, is – when are the Giants going to end their losing streak? It is now up to four games, and the commanding lead they had in the National League West isn’t so commanding anymore, as it is down to 4.5 games. Another question is how much they can get out of Matt Cain, who has been on the DL since June 13 with hamstring issues. BetAnySports customers will get to find out, in this game that begins at 7:10 PM ET.
The Red Sox are very anxious to get an answer to their own major question, which is how much of an answer Drew Pomeranz is going to provide for their pitching staff. Not that they are all that perplexed in that area; after all, they have won seven of their lats eight games, including a 4-0 shutout over these Giants on Tuesday, to move to within a half-game of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East race. But Pomeranz, who represented the San Diego Padres in the recent All-Star Game, is a red-hot pitcher and could make this team even more of a force to be reckoned with come playoff time – if they are able to get to the post-season.
In the baseball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Red Sox are laying quite a price:
San Francisco Giants (Cain – R) +190
Boston Red Sox (Pomeranz – L) -210
Over 10 Runs -115
Under 10 Runs -105
Giants +1.5 Runs -105
Red Sox -1.5 Runs -115
Do you want to lay that big a number to a division leader? Well, consider that Pomeranz has already faced the Giants three times this season, and his last time against them, he limited them to just two hits over seven innings. And when you have allowed just one run and ten hits over your last 21 innings, as he has, you really had to hate for the All-Star break to come, because maybe it spoiled some of that momentum. Pomeranz, who was the fifth pick in the amateur draft in 2010 out of Ole Miss, held opponents to a .173 average this season, which was the best in the NL, and that includes Clayton Kershaw. The idea that somebody had to get injured for him to get a ticket to the All-Star Game – at Petco Park no less – was almost a travesty.
BetAnySports patrons know that the Red Sox have David Price at the head of the rotation, with the surprising Steven Wright (11-5, 2.78 ERA) and Rick Porcello (12-2) behind him. But they were stuck for other possibilities, with question marks surrounding Clay Buchholz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Joe Kelly. That is why Pomeranz fits in so nicely. And if he can stay close to this year’s numbers, this is a formidable playoff rotation.
The Giants are in a situation that isn’t all that dissimilar, in that they have solid people in the top two spots in the rotation, with Johnny Cueto (13-2, 2.64) and Madison Bumgarner (10-5, 2.12), and Jeff Samardzija (9-5, 4.05) holding down the third spot. If Cain can show some of the form he did in three May starts, where he yielded just four runs and 19 hits in 21 innings, San Francisco would be in a lot better shape.
