Matchup: Michigan Wolverines vs. Washington Huskies

The College Football National Championship, between the Wolverines of Michigan and the Huskies of Washington, is set to take place on Monday, January 8th in Houston’s NRG Stadium. It’s the biggest game of the college football season, and this is a must-watch matchup. Michigan comes in as the No. 1 ranked team in the country after taking down Nick Saban’s Alabama, while Washington is right behind the Wolverines at No. 2 after beating the Texas Longhorns. Both Michigan and Washington are an incredible 14-0, making them the only unbeaten teams in the FBS this season, but only one can remain undefeated. Michigan enters the contest as the favorite, but Washington has continually found a way to beat every opponent they’ve faced this season, making this one of the best National Championship matchups in recent memory.

Michigan vs. Washington Season Stats & Betting Trends

Michigan is finally where they belong as the No. 1 ranked team in the country. The Wolverines have been a force all season, scoring 36.0 points per game and allowing the fewest points in the FBS with 10.21 opponent points per game. Michigan has given up just 16 touchdowns all season, while scoring 65 themselves. RB Blake Corum has been the driving force of the offense, recording 1,111 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns. Corum and QB J.J. McCarthy will look to lead the Wolverines to their first National Championship since 1997.

(1)Michigan Wolverines Betting Trends

  • 8-5-1 ATS this season
  • 7-6-1 O/U record

Washington has certainly put the Michigan Wolverines on upset alert. The Huskies always seem to find a way to win, and their perfect record is evidence of that. Averaging 37.6 points per game, the Washington offense is one of the best in the country. However, the Huskies defense, that’s allowing 24.14 opponent points per game, has been called into question. Washington’s pass defense in particular, which allowed 267 yards per game this season, is the Huskies’ Achilles heel, which could come back to bite them. However, with the combination of QB Michael Penix, RB Dillon Johnson, and WR Rome Odunze on offense, the Huskies could be looking at their first National Championship since 1991.

(2)Washington Huskies Betting Trends

  • 7-6-1 ATS this season
  • 7-7 O/U record

Michigan vs. Washington Game Predictions

The 2024 National Championship is going to be a great game, no doubt about that. Michigan’s defense has dominated all season, allowing a season average of just 10.21 opponent points per game, the best in the FBS. Washington’s offense, led by Heisman runner-up Michael Penix Jr., is an uncaring machine that runs through every defense they face. Whether or not these teams can stop each other remains to be seen, but as the saying goes, defense wins championships.

The Wolverines allowed 28 fewer touchdowns than the Huskies this season, and while Washington’s offense has been impressive, not many teams have fared well against Michigan’s suffocating defense. The Huskies always keep it close, and they’ll do the same here, but if the game comes down to Washington needing a game winning drive, it seems Michigan’s defense would have the advantage. Moreover, the Wolverines passing game will face little resistance from the porous Huskies secondary, and if Michigan gets a lead, Washington will be hard pressed to make a comeback.

Moneyline Pick: Michigan Wolverines (-195)

ATS Pick: Washington Huskies (+4.5)

O/U Pick: Over (56.5)
