The UNLV Rebels head into this game with a record of 4-1 on the season and a conference record of 2-0. They are coming off a win at home last week against the New Mexico Lobos where they won by a final score of 31-20. The Rebels started that game off slow as they fell behind 17-0 early in the second quarter. They were able to go on a 31-3 run to end the game. Quarterback Doug Brumfield led the team in passing with 233 yards and rushed for 19 yards and one touchdown. He did however throw an interception in the fourth quarter but it didn’t lead to a scoring drive from the Lobos. The Rebels had an underwhelming performance on offense but their defense played an important part in their 17-point comeback. They were able to hold the Lobos to only completing 2 third-down plays out of 11. On top of that, they intercepted New Mexico’s quarterback twice and the second interception was at the end of the game where they returned it for a touchdown to solidify the victory. This team has struggled against the Spartans in years past and will need their defense to have another great outing if they want to be competing in the game.
The San Jose State Spartans head into this game with a record of 3-1 on the season and a conference record of 1-0. They are coming off a strong win on the road against the Wyoming Cowboys where they won by a final score of 33-16. In that game, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro had a great game. He threw for 314 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 24 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Elijah Cooks benefitted from Cordeiro’s great passing game as he caught 8 passes for 177 yards. Running back Kairee Robinson also joined in on the fun as he rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown. The Spartans recorded over 200 more yards of total offense compared to the Cowboys. Their defense also did a great job as they limited the amount of time the Cowboys had the ball. The Spartans had a time of possession of 36:52 compared to the Cowboys’ 23:08. The defense also forced a safety and an interception. The Spartans have found success against the Rebels these past two years and should head into this game with confidence after a great road victory.
I think the Spartans extend their winning streak against the Rebels in this game. They are at home and their quarterback is coming off of a great game. The Rebels did show heart in their comeback win but if they start off slow like they did last week in this game, they will not be able to mount another comeback as the Spartans are great at moving the ball.
