Or Will they?

When you are the number four ranked team in college football, the buzz around that team is usually about their wins and losses expectations. But that hasn’t really been the case for this Michigan Wolverines team. Their buzz has been about their QB battle they’ve had brewing. Coach Jim Harbaugh made it clear before last week’s opener that incumbent starter Cade McNamara would start against Colorado State, but that sophomore 5-star recruit J.J. McCarthy would get the nod against Hawaii. In Michigan’s 51-7 win, McNamara went 9-of-18 passing for 136 yards and a touchdown, while McCarthy completed all four of his passes and added a 20-yard touchdown run in a performance Harbaugh described as “electric.” McNamara’s performance wasn’t anything impressive, so if I had to choose, I’d say that McCarthy has the slight edge despite the small sample size. The question will be whether McCarthy can build upon his late game push.

The Rainbow Warriors have been blown out twice at home to start the season, first 63-10 by Vanderbilt on Aug. 27 and then 49-17 by Western Kentucky last Saturday. The biggest problem offensively for Hawaii has been taking care of the ball. The Rainbow Warriors committed six turnovers against Western Kentucky. There have already been three drives that the opposing team has gotten points of turnovers this season against Hawaii. Another stat that will drive coaches wild is that Hawaii also has committed 20 penalties for 181 yards in only two games.

Hawaii hasn’t beaten a Power 5 opponent in 12 years, and that won’t start today, but, because of the QB controversy, I don’t expect this Michigan Wolverines offense to flow as evenly as they think it will despite the QB switch. I don’t see Michigan covering their spread.
