OLE MISS VS. FSU COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW 9/5

The Florida State Seminoles won the national championship a few seasons ago using a redshirt freshman at quarterback. They will hope that lightning strikes twice as they take the field against the Ole Miss Rebels in the season opener for both teams. The action is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, which gives FSU a home field edge of sorts. BetAnySports customers know that even after the game kicks off, they can partake in live, in-game betting, IN REAL TIME, through the facilities of Live Betting Ultra.

The Seminoles had a couple of guys at QB last year. Everett Golson transferred over from Notre Dame, and he went through some injury problems, at which time he was replaced by Sean Maguire, who wound up keeping the job and completing 58% of his passes. The ‘Noles went 10-3 and lost the Peach Bowl to Houston by two touchdowns.

Now Maguire is back on the second team, is he suffered a foot injury that required an operation in mid-August. He is back practicing, but he lost ground, and Jimbo Fisher awarded the starting job to Deondre Francois, a redshirt frosh who is more dangerous with his feet. But can he get it done with his arm? That was something special about Jameis Winston, who led FSU to a national title in his first year at the helm.

In the college football betting odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Seminoles are the favorites:

Ole Miss Rebels +6

Under 59 points -110

Ole Miss, which beat Oklahoma State 48-20 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 10-3, is quite satisfied with its situation at quarterback. That is because they have Chad Kelly, a Clemson transfer and nephew of Jim Kelly, who threw for 4042 yards last season and engineered the victory over Alabama. The Rebels are deep at wide receiver, although it is still going to be difficult to find a replacement for Laquon Treadwell, who was a first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings.

Kelly can be called a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender, and it is likely that Florida State will rely heavily on its own Heisman hopeful, Dalvin Cook, who, arguably, is the most explosive running back in the country. Would BetAnySports patrons argue a lot with that? Cook AVERAGED 7.4 yards per carry and had 22 runs of twenty yards or longer. It might be something of a concern for Ole Miss that it has to replace six starters on defense, and those guys were genuine standouts, including defensive end Robert Nkamdiche, linebacker CJ Johnson, and defensive backfield members Trae Elston (an All-American) and Mike Hilton.

The Rebels have to guard against being too one-dimensional, and depth at running back got hurt when Jordan Wilkins was declared ineligible. Kelly might have to supply some of the rushing game; the 500 yards he had on the ground are the most of anyone returning.

Hanging over the Ole Miss program are some NCAA investigators, as questions have been raised about recruiting practices. This came as a result of an off-season, pre-draft incident involving tackle Laremy Tunsil, who “spilled the beans” about how he was allegedly courted by the school. But we are not sure that has all that much bearing on this game in particular.
