The Florida State Seminoles won the national championship a few seasons ago using a redshirt freshman at quarterback. They will hope that lightning strikes twice as they take the field against the Ole Miss Rebels in the season opener for both teams. The action is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, which gives FSU a home field edge of sorts. Ole Miss, which beat Oklahoma State 48-20 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 10-3, is quite satisfied with its situation at quarterback. That is because they have Chad Kelly, a Clemson transfer and nephew of Jim Kelly, who threw for 4042 yards last season and engineered the victory over Alabama. The Rebels are deep at wide receiver, although it is still going to be difficult to find a replacement for Laquon Treadwell, who was a first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings.

Kelly can be called a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender, and it is likely that Florida State will rely heavily on its own Heisman hopeful, Dalvin Cook, who, arguably, is the most explosive running back in the country. Hanging over the Ole Miss program are some NCAA investigators, as questions have been raised about recruiting practices. This came as a result of an off-season, pre-draft incident involving tackle Laremy Tunsil, who “spilled the beans” about how he was allegedly courted by the school. But we are not sure that has all that much bearing on this game in particular.
