No. 18 Oklahoma Hosts SMU Mustangs
The Oklahoma Sooners won their season opener against Arkansas State with ease, taking down the Red Wolves in a 73-0 blowout. Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel looked fantastic, going 19/22 for 308 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air. The Sooners recorded an incredible 642 total yards (422 passing, 220 rushing) on the way to routing a dejected Arkansas State, but their week 2 matchup will present them a much tougher opponent: Southern Methodist University (SMU).
The SMU Mustangs are a favorite to win the American Athletic Conference, and while they likely won’t keep up with the Sooners through all four quarters, SMU showed their mettle in the season opener. The Mustangs recorded 457 total yards (248 passing, 209 rushing) and held their opponent, LA Tech, scoreless through the first half. SMU QB Preston Stone went 23/37 for 248 yards and 3 touchdowns, while RB LJ Johnson Jr. averaged 9.1 yards per carry on 14 attempts.
The SMU Mustangs are good for their conference, but they aren’t a top-25 team. The Oklahoma Sooners on the other hand are a top-tier Division I program, and although SMU looked good in their opener, the Mustangs can’t hang with OU. The Sooners will cover, and likely move up the national standings after Saturday.
So for our SMU vs. (18) Oklahoma expert pick, take the Oklahoma Sooners to Cover the Spread (-110) on Saturday.
