The Minnesota Golden Gophers finished with a record of 9-4 and were the second seed in the Big Ten West. They had a conference record of 6-3 and ended their season on a four-game win streak with their final victory against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Last season, quarterback, Tanner Morgan, led the Golden Gophers in passing yards as he threw for 2,044 yards. What’s interesting is that he only threw for 10 touchdowns and had 9 interceptions. It’s impressive that the Golden Gophers were able to win 9 games with their quarterback just breaking 2,000 yards and only throwing for 10 touchdowns. Morgan is heading into his senior year and should try to limit his interception to touchdown ratio if he wants to lead this team further and end the year with a better record. The Golden Gophers found success last season as a rushing team and they rushed for 2,575 yards and 27 touchdowns. They averaged 198 rushing yards per game and averaged 4.3 rushing yards per attempt. Minnesota was able to have a quarterback have an underwhelming season and still win 9 games because of their phenomenal rushing game. Unfortunately, they lost their two best running backs from last season to the transfer portal and will start Trey Potts. Potts finished last season with the third most rushing yards on the team with 552. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry and rushed for six touchdowns which was tied for the most rushing touchdowns on the team last season. Heading into this game and season, expect the Golden Gophers to continue to find success through rushing the ball, and attacking the Aggies on the ground.

The New Mexico State Aggies finished last season with a disappointing record of 2-10 and were the fifth seed in the Independent division. The Aggies have already started their regular season campaign as they played against Nevada last week. In that game, they lost by a final score of 23-12. Already having a record of 0-1, the Aggies will look back at that game and try to figure out if there is anything to build off of. For one, the Aggies quarterback, Gavin Frakes, led the game in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and quarterback rating. He threw for 143 yards, and one touchdown and had a quarterback rating of 85.8. However, Frakes didn’t start this game. Quarterback Diego Pavia did and he absolutely ruined the Aggies chance at winning this game. Pavia threw 3 interceptions and lost a fumble. He was responsible for four turnovers. It would be a miracle if a team won after four turnovers. Plus the Aggies missed a field goal on their opening drive of the game. Everything seemed to not go New Mexico State’s way in this game. The only good that came from this game is that the Aggies were able to force a safety and they now know that Frakes is a decent quarterback.

In this game, the Golden Gophers will dominate. It is most likely that Frakes will start in this game but if Pavia does start, it’s really hard to imagine he does better against a better team in Minnesota. If Frakes does start he might have the opportunity to carry over the success he found against Nevada, or he will show why he wasn’t starting over Pavia in the first place. Nonetheless, I expect Minnesota to run all over the Aggies and win this game comfortably and start their regular season campaign.
