The Navy Midshipmen finished last season with a record of 4-8 and were the eighth seed in the American Athletic Conference. They had a conference record of 4-8 and ended their season on a two-game winning streak and had their final victory against the Army Black Knights. Last season, quarterback, Tai Lavatai, led the Midshipmen in passing yards as he threw for 449 yards, while also throwing for 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The Midshipmen are a rushing team. On their roster, they do not a running back position, instead, they only use the full-back position as their rusher. They rushed for 2,712 yards and had 19 rushing touchdowns. They averaged 226 rushing yards per game and averaged 3.9 rushing yards per attempt. Last season, full-back, Isaac Ruoss, led the Midshipmen in rushing yards as he rushed for 641 yards and had 5 touchdowns. However, he is no longer on the roster. The Midshipmen will start Anton Hall Jr. at full-back and have him be their bell cow heading into this season. The Midshipmen also like having a slotback player on the field at all times as it allows for different run plays. This year, wide receiver Maquel Haywood will line up at slotback for them. In this game, expect Navy to rush the ball and to run all over the Blue Hens.
The Delaware Blue Hens finished last season with a record of 5-6and were the ninth seed in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Blue Hens had a conference record of 3-5 and ended their season on a two-game losing streak and lost their final game to the Villanova Wildcats. Last season, quarterback Zach Gwynn led the team in passing yards with 1,328 while throwing for 8 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Gwynn will serve as the backup to Nolan Henderson this season. Last season, Henderson threw for 646 yards and had 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Clearly, the Blue Hens feel that Henderson’s ball control will help them win more games. Next, running back Dejoun Lee led the Blue Hens in rushing yards after he rushed for 814. He is no longer with the team and the starting running back position now belongs to Quincy Watson. Watson was able to rush for 159 yards and one touchdown last season. Lastly, wide receiver Thyrick Pitts led the team in receiving yards with 669 yards on 43 catches. He was also able to score 7 touchdowns and had an average of 15.6 yards per reception. It’s very hard to see the Blue Hens upset the Midshipmen in this game but nothing is impossible.
In this game, the Navy Midshipmen are expected to walk away with a victory. The Midshipmen belong to the FBS and the Blue Hens belong to the FCS. Clearly, the Midshipmen have the advantage and should take care of business. Interestingly, in the last three games, these two have played against each other, the lowest total points scored was 53 and if looking at the last two, the lowest was 57. These two teams like scoring points when they play and I expect the same in this one.
For our, Delaware Blue Hens vs Navy Midshipmen prediction, take the over on the total points scored in the game.
