It is always kind of fun to think about what happens when one coach who is very familiar with a team’s personnel, yet has a well-defined style, takes up with another major college football program. And what adds even more of a twist to that is when he faces his former team in his first shot out of the box. That is exactly the case as the LSU Tigers pay a visit to Lambeau Field to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in a game that begins at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday. Both of these teams are coming off 10-3 seasons, but it could be said that LSU suffered the bigger disappointment. That is why they made at least one move to shore up their defensive situation, hiring Dave Aranda as the coordinator. He’s got great qualifications; namely, he built the Wisconsin defense, which ranked second in the nation. So obviously the Badgers are very familiar with the 3-4 alignment he has installed, and the Tigers, through Aranda, will have a pretty good grasp of the personnel Wisky has on both sides of the ball.

These teams met two seasons ago at NRG Stadium in Houston, and Wisconsin was looking pretty good through three quarters, leading by eleven points. But the Badgers were too conservative, and QB Joel Stave wasn’t enough of a playmaker. The Bayou Bengals scored a couple of unanswered touchdowns to win.

Aranda left behind a lot of talent on the Wisconsin defense. And they will have a heavy assignment on Saturday, as they try to corral one of the best running backs in the land – maybe THE best. Leonard Fournette came to Baton Rouge with a lot of hoopla, and it may all culminate in a Heisman Trophy. As a sophomore, he ran for 1953 yards and 22 touchdowns, and his only real dud of a game came against Alabama. Of course, if we are to believe that Wisconsin has an elite defense (they return five of their starting front seven on the stop unit), the Badgers could present some problems.

If LSU’s quarterback does not show some real progress over last year’s performance, it’s going to make Wisconsin’s job a little easier. Brandon Harris is seemingly limited as a quarterback, without the accuracy Les Miles would like to see. He has mobility but completed just 54% of his passes, so there would have to be some temptation on the part of the Badgers to stack the line.

And he will have do well enough to dissuade the Bengals (who return nine starters on defense) from stacking things up against Corey Clement, who was going to be a Heisman contender as Melvin Gordon’s successor,. until he was sort of sidetracked by a sports hernia which contributed toward a 221-yard season as a junior. Don’t bet against him going well over 1000 yards.

When Wisconsin loses, they often keep it close; in fact, only two of their last 21 defeats have been by more than ten points.
