Line Movement
Looking at this game from a purely betting viewpoint, we can see that there is some heavy line movement in this game. Virginia Tech entered as -320 favorites and now, after having only 46% of the public betters backing them, that line has moved all the way to -260. There are still huge favorites, but then when you look at the spread you see that they opened at -7 and now are currently -6 despite having 61% of public bets on them. That is some substantial reverse movement on the line and makes us believe that the play will be Old Dominion +6. Additionally, when we look at the point total, the opening number for this game was 52.5 points, but has moved all the way down to 47.5 despite there being 55% of public money on the over. There are two possible explanations and the main reasons that I believe caused this line movement. The first is that Virginia Tech will be starting their season under new head coach, Brent Pry. The second is that Old Dominion got 17 of their starters back, including ten on offense. You add in a couple of transfers from power five schools and this team is a perfect candidate to surprise this season.
