Tonight will be the coaching debut for Timmy Chang, the head coach of Hawaii. Hawaii parted ways with former head coach Todd Graham after he went 11-11 in just two seasons. Graham’s Department was a difficult one for the school as he was forced to resign following allegations of mistreatment from players and an investigation by the state Senate. On the coaching side for Vanderbilt, this matchup marks the beginning of the second season under head coach Clark Lea. Last year was less than ideal for him as The Commodores finished 2-10 in his debut season. Building upon that, and the topic of our last year was a year to forget for Vanderbilt. They finished 2021 with the worst scoring offense among all Power 5 conference teams and the third worst overall in the Football Bowl Subdivision at 15.8 points per game. 

The matchup to watch in tonight’s game will be the Vanderbilt secondary against the Hawaii passing offense that we all have come to know as a high-powered volume offense. Timmy Chang was a record setting quarterback for Hawaii, so you can expect him to want to throw the ball. This offensive minded head coach will definitely look to continue the tradition of a high-powered throwing offense. It is the formula of what got the Rainbow Warriors to their first ever Mountain West Championship game under Nick Rolovich in 2019, so expected to be executed.
