Michigan State vs. Marquette
The Michigan State Spartans and the Marquette Golden Eagles will play against each other at the Nationwide Arena in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the East Region (5:15p.m. ET, CBS). The Spartans will look to keep their run alive as they easily cruised past the USC Trojans 72-62 in the first round. Michigan State is playing some great basketball looked dangerous in that game, but they will have to come out t=ready to play in this game against Marquette. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles won easily against the Vermont Catamounts 78-61 in the first round. Marquette is a scary two seed and will look to become the team to make it out of the East Region. They have won their last ten games.
Michigan State Basketball
With a 20-12 record on the season and a 11-8 record in conference play, the Spartans secured the fourth seed in the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan State had a disappointing performance in their first game of the tournament losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Michigan State was still able to make it into the NCAA Tournament as a seventh seed. In their first game they defeated the tenth seed USC Trojans.
The Spartans have gotten production from a lot of their players this season. They have three players that are averaging double-digit points this season. Senior guard Tyson Walker has been leading Michigan State this year, as he leads the team in points. Walker is averaging 14.5 points a game this season. Senior guard Joey Hauser is averaging 14.3 points and 7.0 rebounds (Which leads the team) a game this season. Do not forget about junior guard A.J. Hoggard who is averaging 12.5 points and 6.0 assists (Which leads the team) a game this season.
In their win against the Trojans, Hauser led the way finishing with 17 points and 8 rebounds. He shot 4-6 from the three-point line. Sophomore guard Jaden Akins also had a monster game finishing with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Walker finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. In the win, the Nittany Lions shot 48.1% from the floor and 35.7% from the three-point line.
Marquette Basketball
With a 29-6 record on the season and a 17-3 record in conference play, the Golden Eagles finished in second in the Big East Standings. In the tournament they were the first seed as they won their first two games easily against the St. John’s Red Storm and the UConn Huskies. In the championship they defeated the Xavier Musketeers 65-51. In the first round of the tournament they cruised past Vermont.
Marquette has gotten a lot of production from their players this season. They are led by sophomore guard Kam Jones as he leads the team in points. Jones is averaging 15.1 points a game this season. They are also led by sophomore guard Tyler Kolek who is averaging 13.1 points and 7.6 assists (Which leads the team) a game this season.
In their win against Vermont in the first round, Jones led the way with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Sophomore forward Oso Ighodaro also had a great game finishing with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. In the win, Vermont shot 51.8% from the floor and 50.0% from the three-point line.
