If you’re the Miami Hurricanes, you are hoping to establish a basketball tradition that just doesn’t exist yet. For period of time, Miami was the only Division I college football school that didn’t have a basketball program. But they have been back for little more than 30 years, although this is only the third time they have advanced of the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Now they hope to go one step further, with possibly their best team ever, as they lock horns with the Villanova Wildcats in action that will take place in Louisville at the KFC Yum Center at 7:10 PM ET on CBS. Miami (27-7 straight-up, 19-14 ATS) is the third seed in the region, and one of six teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference to make it this far. They were expected to encounter a roadblock last time out against Wichita State, which had come into the game with two impressive victories in a row, along with a reputation as a team that overachieved in this event. But Miami shut the Shockers down to no small degree, holding them to just 34% shooting and trucking up 55% themselves. The result was a 65-57 victory that was further reaffirmation of head coach Jim Larranaga’s “Scramble” defense, which uses a variety of presses and traps all over the court, depending on the situation.

When it comes to experience in the backcourt, it was tough to beat Wichita State’s combination of Fred Van Vleet and Ron Baker, but these two tandems are probably right up there. Villanova has one of the best players anywhere in Josh Hart, who cannot only shoot the basketball but can also hit the boards as well, as evidenced by 6.9 rebounds per game. His partner in crime is Ryan Acidiacono, who is razor sharp with the ball. It is highly unusual in college hoops for anyone to have 3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio, but this guy does.
