Matchup: UConn Huskies vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

The women’s March Madness championship tournament began with 64 teams vying for the title, but two weeks later 60 teams were eliminated, leaving us with the Final Four. One of the semifinal matchups is No. 3 UConn versus No. 1 Iowa. The UConn Huskies have a history of dominating the women’s tournament, recording the most championship titles (11) and the most Final Four appearances (23). The Huskies were the top-dogs in women’s basketball for so long, winning 4-straight championship titles at one point (2013-2016), but now UConn takes on the new face of college basketball, Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

You can’t mention Iowa basketball without talking about Caitlin Clark, the record breaking phenom who has taken the sport to meteoric levels with her unmatched range, vision, and passion. Clark holds the record for the most points scored in college basketball (3,685 pts), men’s and women’s, snapping Pete Maravich’s 54-year record (3,667 pts) earlier this year. Clark has led the Hawkeyes to their 2nd-straight Final Four, but they face a tough test in the UConn Huskies.

UConn vs. Iowa Game Predictions

I can’t wait for this one! UConn versus Iowa could be the game of the year. We have Caitlin Clark versus Paige Bueckers, two of the most prolific scorers in college basketball going head-to-head for a shot at the championship. This is going to be a back-and-forth barn burner, but in the end Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes will come out on top. Clark is unmatched in so many parts of the game. She gets so much attention because of her scoring ability, which is certainly justified, but Clark’s real strength is her playmaking.

Clark draws so much attention from opposing defenses that her teammates are often left unmarked, leaving No. 22 with an opportunity to show off her passing ability. Clark leads the Hawkeyes in scoring, no duh, but she also leads the team in assists (9.0 per game), rebounds (7.3 per game), and steals (1.8). She truly does everything for the Hawkeyes, recording 41 points, 12 assists, and 7 rebounds in the win over LSU that got Iowa to the Final Four.

However, UConn is no pushover. In fact, Cailtin Clark has never beaten the Huskies, posting an 0-2 record against UConn. That’s because the Huskies play suffocating defense, limiting opponents to just 56.8 points per game. I guarantee UConn will be all over Clark in an attempt to limit her touches, but what makes this Iowa team so good is the supporting players they have around No. 22. Senior’s like Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin will help keep the Hawkeyes focused and force UConn to defend everyone on the floor, not just Clark. It certainly won’t be easy, but the Iowa Hawkeyes will get back to the championship with a win over UConn.
