The San Diego State Aztecs and the Creighton Bluejays will play against each other at the KFC Yum! Center in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament in the South Region (2:20 p.m. ET, CBS). The Aztecs will look to keep their run alive as they shocked the world by defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide 71-64. San Diego State has the defense to continue their run in this tourney. Their elite defense will be tested though against against a great Creighton team. Meanwhile, the Bluejays defeated the Princeton Tigers 86-75 in the Sweet 16. Creighton will look to make it the Final Four for the first time in program history.
San Diego State Basketball
With a 29-6 record on the season and a 15-3 record in conference play, the Aztecs secured the fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament. They automatically punched their ticket into the dance by winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament. San Diego State has been one of the better teams this year and it has showed so far knocking off the Charleston Cougars 63-57 in the first round and the Furman Palidans 75-52 in the second round. Then in the Sweet 16 the Aztecs shocked the world defeating the number one team in college basketball the Alabama Crimson Tide 71-64.
The Aztecs have gotten production from a lot of their players this season. Senior guard Matt Bradley has been leading San Diego State this year, as he leads the team in points. Bradley is averaging 12.8 points a game this season. Senior guard Darrion Trammell is averaging 9.8 points a game this season. Do not forget about Lamont Butler, who is averaging 8.5 points and 3.4 assists (Which leads the team) a game this season.
In their win against Alabama in the Sweet 16, Trammell led the way finishing with 21 points and 5 rebounds. He shot 3-5 from the three-point line. Senior forward Jaedon LeDee finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds. In the win, the Aztecs shot 37.7% from the floor and 35.3% from the three-point line.
Creighton Basketball
With a 24-12 record on the season and an 14-6 record in conference play, the Bluejays were selected as the sixth seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, the Bluejays defeated the NC State Wolfpack 72-63. Next, they stunned the Baylor Bears 85-76 in the second round. Then in the Sweet 16 they put an end to the Cinderella Story of the Princeton Tigers beating them 86-75. Creighton will look to make it into the Final Four and win the whole thing.
Creighton has gotten a lot of production from their players this season. They are led by junior center Ryan Kalkbrenner as he leads the team in points. Kalkbrenner is averaging 15.9 points a game this season. They are also led by sophomore guard Trey Alexander, who is averaging 13.7 points a game this season. Senior guard Baylor Scheierman is having a great season averaging 12.8 points and 8.3 rebounds (Which leads the team) a game this season.
In their win against Princeton in the Sweet 16, Kalkbrenner led the way finishing with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Scheierman was right behind with 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. He shot 5-7 from the three-point line. Alexander finished with 19 points. In the win, Creighton shot 58.2% from the floor and 37.5% from the three-point line.
