Saint Mary’s vs. UConn 

The Saint Mary’s Gaels and the UConn Huskies will play against each other at the MVP Arena in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the West Region (6:10 p.m. ET, TNT). The Gaels will look to keep their run alive as they easily cruised past the VCU Rams 63-51 in the first round. Saint Mary’s is playing some great basketball looked dangerous in that game, but they will have their hands full against UConn. Meanwhile, the Huskies won easily against the Iona Gaels 87-63 in the first round. UConn is a scary four seed and will look to become the team to make it out of the West Region with Kansas eliminated.

Saint Mary’s Basketball

With a 27-7 record on the season and a 14-2 record in conference play, the Gaels secured the second seed in the WCC Tournament. Saint Mary’s won their first game against the BYU Cougars 76-69. They had a disappointing game against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the championship game. Saint Mary’s was still able to make it into the NCAA Tournament as the fifth seed. In their first game they defeated the twelfth seed VCU Rams. 

The Gaels have gotten production from a lot of their players this season. They have four players that are averaging double-digit points this season. Senior guard Logan Johnson has been leading Saint Mary’s this year, as he leads the team in points and assists. Johnson is averaging 14.6 points and 3.6 assists a game this season. Freshman guard Aidan Mahaney is averaging 14.1 points a game this season. Do not forget about senior guard Alex Ducas who is averaging 12.6 points a game this season.

In their win against the VCU, Ducas led the way finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Junior center Mitchell Saxen also had a great game finishing with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. In the win, the Gaels shot 40.8% from the floor and 17.6% from the three-point line.

UConn Basketball

With a 26-8 record on the season and a 13-7 record in conference play, the Huskies finished in second in the Big East Standings. In the tournament they were the fourth seed as they won their first game easily against the Providence Friars 73-66. In the championship they lost to the Marquette Golden Eagles 70-68. In the first round of the tournament they cruised past Iona.

UConn has gotten a lot of production from their players this season. They are led by junior forward Adama Sanogo as he leads the team in points and rebounds. Sanogo is averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds a game this season. They are also led by sophomore guard Jordan Hawkins who is averaging 16.0 points a game this season.

 In their win against Iona in the first round, Sanogo finished with a double-double scoring 28 points and 13 rebounds. Hawkins also had a great game finishing with 13 points. In the win, UConn shot 48.5% from the floor and 44.0% from the three-point line.
