The 2021 Major League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 13 at Coors Filed in Denver, Colorado, pitting teams comprised of players from the American League against those from the National League. The 91st Midsummer Classic was originally scheduled to be played at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia but was moved due to MLB’s disagreement with the state’s recently passed voting rights legislation.

The game was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19, the first time that had occurred since 1945, when World War II prompted the action. Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles was scheduled to host that event and will instead be the site of the All-Star Game in 2022 for the first time since 1980. Coors Field last hosted the MLB All-Star Game on July 7, 1998, as it’s traditional for the organization to award the widely watched clash to franchises that build new stadiums. The Colorado Rockies began playing in the stadium after it was completed in 1995 following two seasons of play at Mile High Stadium. The last All-Star Game was played at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians with the American League winning for the seventh consecutive time by the score of 4-3. It was the second time the stadium had played host to the All-Star Game, 22 years after the American League defeated the National League 3-1 in 1997.

Typically, Major League Baseball alternates the sites of the games between American League and National League cities, but that isn’t a hard and fast rule, having been broken many times, including over the upcoming two games. The original Yankee Stadium and the old Cleveland Stadium each hosted the game four times while the city of New York has had nine All-Star Games played in The Big Apple. Major League Baseball has yet to award future game sites with the exception of 2022 at Dodger Stadium and 2026 at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park in 2026 when the city will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Each team is comprised of 34 players from its respective league and the managers are generally those whose teams made it to the World Series the previous years. The designated hitter rule is used in every Al-Star Game, regardless of which league the host team plays in. The teams are determined by a combination of fan voting, player voting and manager selection. Fans pick the starting position players for each league, including the designated hitter for the American League. The players, coaches and managers vote on one backup player for each position as well as five starting and three relief pitchers.

The managers choose the remaining players to fill out the roster to 33, using input from other managers and the league office. All teams have to be represented by at least one player, which this process guarantees. Finally, there is one final internet vote by the fans to complete each roster, bringing the final tally of players to 34 for each team.
