NFL Betting Preview: NY Jets at Arizona Cardinals 10/17

The New York Jets know that they are about to be virtually eliminated from the playoff race, as they have lost four of their first five games. However, if they could somehow come up with a win over the Arizona Cardinals, they have four winnable games before the bye week. Can they get some momentum going? Well, we can say that they have a head coach who is very familiar with Monday night’s opponent, having been a key assistant for them before taking the Jets’ job. But the Cardinals are a team that maybe feeling some desperation as well, as these clubs head into this 8:30 PM ET start at University of Phoenix Stadium. Of course, if it’s Monday night, that means the game will be televised by ESPN, and BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity, even after the opening kickoff, to place wagers on the game through the magic of Live Betting Ultra.

What New York needs is much better quarterback play out of Ryan Fitzpatrick. He has been what you might call a “journeyman” and has played a lot like it so far this season, with 10 interceptions already. He imploded against Kansas City, getting picked up six times, but teammates and the coaching staff have shown a lot of faith in him. Really, what other alternative to they have? Geno Smith, the previous starter, has proven that he does not provide a lot of long-term effectiveness in that role.

What is really going to hurt is that Fitzpatrick is missing his best red zone target in Eric Decker, who has been declared out for the season with a rotator cuff injury. Decker was also making his receptions count, as he averaged 21.6 yards. Brandon Marshall has had butterfingers this season, with five dropped passes, and Matt Forte is averaging just 3.7 yards per carry and has only 13 catches, so as you can see, the pistons are not all pumping in Gotham this year.

In the Monday night football odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Cardinals are considerable favorites:

Arizona Cardinals  -7 (-120)
New York Jets  +7 (+100)

Over 46.5 points  -110
Under 46.5 points  -110

Todd Bowles, they head coach of the Jets, served as a member of Bruce Arians’ staff in Arizona, and as defensive coordinator, he installed the scheme that they still use right now. So he should be very familiar on how to attack it. Actually, Bowles goes back even further than that with Arians, having played for him at Temple University. This is the first time these two have met as head coaches in the NFL, and the chess match will be interesting, to say the least, because there is nothing but familiarity here.

Obviously, much of the handicapping formula on the part of BetAnySports patrons has to come down to the quality of the personnel on the respective rosters. Arizona is a team that can put a lot of receivers out there at once, and the Jets’ top cornerback, Darrelle Revis, has been hampered by a hamstring injury and hasn’t played all that well, truth be told, when he has been healthy, as quarterbacks have completed 80% of the passes they have thrown in his direction.

If it was Drew Stanton getting the start for Arizona, we have a different opinion, but Carson Palmer appears ready to get back into the lineup after sitting out one week with a concussion. Now having said that, we have to concede that Palmer has not been terrific form this season, completing just below 59% of his throws and being intercepted five times. Is also getting sacked more than usual (12 times). So it is vitally important that David Johnson take a big role here. No one has to tell him that; the second-year man out of Northern Iowa is having a great season so far, with 457 rushing yards, and he has been on the receiving end of 17 passes. He is a fantasy darling, and probably the key man in the offense; certainly the backfield, because Chris Johnson is out for the season. No other Arizona running back has more than 21 yards on the ground.
