Arizona at UCLA College Football Betting Preview 10/1

Arizona at UCLA College Football Betting Preview 10/1

The backfield for the Arizona Wildcats looks like a M*A*S*H unit right now. Their best tailback is going to be a game-time decision, from all indications, and they are still playing without their starting quarterback. But they put forth a spirited effort last week, taking on one of the best teams in the country and fighting into overtime with them. Can get they get up to that same emotional level? They may have to against the deeper and stronger UCLA Bruins, who they will meet at 10:30 PM ET at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It is unfortunate for the Wildcats that Nick Wilson’s ankle is hurt, because he is a difference-maker when he is in the lineup. He may still play, but coach Rich Rodriguez is playing things very close to the vest here. Without Wilson, Arizona doesn’t have a lot of running backs to choose from. They had some hope with freshman JJ Taylor, who was looking like he was going to develop into one of the Pac 12’s best runners, but he got hurt and is out for the year. They are working out wide receivers in the backfield during practice week. Actually, their best ball-carrier is going to be their quarterback. Brandon Dawkins leads this team in rushing, and he operates with a lot of efficiency out of Rodriguez’s spread option attack. Last week against Washington he gave the Huskies a little of both the arm and the feet, throwing for 167 yards and logging the football for 176 more.

In the NCAA football odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, UCLA is a sizable favorite at home:

UCLA Bruins -12

Arizona Wildcats +12

Over 58.5 points -110

Under 58.5 points -110

Both of these teams suffered bitter disappointments last week. While Arizona lost that game to Washington in the extra session, UCLA was trying to snap is  eight game losing streak to Stanford. They got close, but a late turnover put the game out of reach, as the Cardinal won 22-13. Part of the reason that UCLA went down to defeat was their inability to rush the football. They’d like to be able to play the power game against other squads, but they have had 50 and 77 yards on the ground the last two weeks. That certainly is going to make them one-dimensional for the better defenses. Not that Arizona has one, so it is quite possible that Josh Rosen can have a field day. He’s thrown five touchdown passes but has been picked off four times this season. And the word is that when he starts making mistakes, there is a carryover effect. He’ll mature in time, and a lot of NFL scouts are hoping for it, because he’s got a cannon for an arm.

BetAnySports patrons saw Arizona have a lot of success on the ground in last year’s meeting against UCLA, racking up 353 yards, but three turnovers did them in as they lost 56-30.

If the Wildcats are careful enough with the football not to make any catastrophic mistakes, the question that comes into play is whether UCLA has enough defensive strength up front to deal with them. The mobility of Dawkins is going to be a problem for anybody, but the Bruins went up against a genuine Heisman Trophy contender last week in Christian McCaffrey, and at least did not let him run wild, as he had “just” 138 yards against them.

UCLA has dropped all four games against the college football pointspread this season, and they have been very ineffective lately covering games as a home favorite, with just a 1-6-1 ATS mark in that role over the last eight occurrences.
