Stanley Cup Betting — Game 5: New York Islanders at Tampa Bay Lightning

The New York Islanders made a change or two, got an explosion from their offense in the third period, and received a game-saving play from one of their outstanding backlines with a second and a half to go.

And so they go to Tampa Bay all tied up at two games apiece and not in a position where they are facing elimination.

BetOnline customers have seen that this Stanley Cup semi-finals series has been loaded with thrills and drama, and indeed, three of the four games have been decided by a single goal.

In Game 4, Tampa Bay had fought back from a 3-0 deficit to within a goal when Ryan McDonagh made a beautiful move that had goalie Semyon Varlamov completely out of position. At that second, defenseman Ryan Pulock slid into the goal crease and deflected a shot that was headed into the net.

End of game. And an all-time great play.

And now here comes Game 5, slated for the Amalie Arena in Tampa at 8:05 PM ET.

In the Stanley Cup betting odds for this game, the Lightning are the favorite:

Islanders coach Barry Trotz, after some reluctance, and we might add some pressure, made the decision to give Kyle Palmieri some time with the first line in Game 4, and it remains to be seen whether that playing time will increase. As we sit here now, Palmieri, the Long Island native who came over at the trade deadline, hasn’t had a point in the series after tallying seven goals in the first two series against Pittsburgh and Boston. At the other end of the spectrum, Brayden Point scored yet again for the Lightning, and that makes seven games in a row in which he’s had a goal. He’s become reliable enough that you can actually get a price in the Stanley Cup props at BetOnline (+131) that he will go without a point in Game 5.

Is Nikita Kucherov due? The former MVP has not scored a goal yet in the series, but he’s picked up six assists, and he nearly had a seventh, as he is the one who fed McDonagh a perfect pass right before Pulock made that great save on him. You can’t feel all that great about the Islanders coming into the game. After all, how many times have you seen a team blow a 3-0 lead in the third period? Yet that could have very easily happened. And the Lightning, for whatever reason, were flat for the first two periods.

We have seen such standout goaltending from these two netminders (Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy and New York’s Semyon Varlamov) that none of these games is likely to get too far out of hand. Both of the coaches design their game plans around the probability that these games will be low-scoring. One of the games went over five goals, and that was because of an empty-netter. And five of the last ten meetings have ended with a 2-1 score. So you can go either with the “Under 5” which brings you a price of +112, or the alternate line of -145 for it to go Under 5-1/2 goals.
