NFL PRESEASON BETTING PREVIEW – DOLPHINS AT COWBOYS 8/19

The Miami Dolphins really need some progress out of Ryan Tannehill AND his offensive line this season, and some of that work starts in the pre-season obviously. But in last week’s game, Tannehill’s backup gave notice that at least part of the quarterback spot is in pretty good shape. Let’s see what happens with more weapons in the fold, as the Dolphins travel to play the Dallas Cowboys in NFL pre-season action that begins at 8 PM ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. In their win over the New York Giants (27-10), Matt Moore came in and completed 10 of 14 passes for 112 yards. He has not been heard from much over the last couple of seasons. The Dolphins also were greatly encouraged by the work of rookie quarterback Branden Doughty, who went seven for nine and won over new head coach Adam Gase, who indicated he felt ‘comfortable” with Doughty handling all of the play selection.

The Cowboys are ecstatic over the work of their own rookie QB. Dak Prescott, if you remember, had been prominently mentioned a couple of seasons ago as a Heisman Trophy favorite at Mississippi State. He last until the fourth round of the draft, where the Cowboys grabbed him. Even though Tony Romo has been knocked out by injury in two of the last three seasons, Jerry Jones did not spend on a veteran backup, and they were in a fix when Kellen Moore went down with a broken leg. So they are really hoping Prescott continues to progress. He went 10-for-12 for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week, and helped the Cowboys build a 24-7 halftime lead at the L.A. Coliseum before the Rams scored three unanswered second-half touchdowns to complete the 28-24 victory.

In the football betting odds posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Cowboys are very slight favorites:

Miami Dolphins +1

Dallas Cowboys -1

Over 40.5 points -110

Under 40.5 points -110

We don’t know how Miami’s offensive line situation is going to work out in the end, but they can be well-set on the left side if Laremy Tunsil can make the adjustment to playing at the guard position. Tunsil was being talked about as a possible #1 overall choice, but then he had his unfortunate incident where he was apparently smoking pot out of a bong, and his high position went up in smoke, as it were. The Dolphins got him in the #13 spot and hope he will turn out to be a bargain.

The quarterbacks will have a couple of playmakers to work with this week, or at least that’s what they hope. Wide receiver Devante Parker, who was a #1 draft choice last year, will see his first action, having sat out with hamstring issues last week, while Arian Foster, the back who is coming off an Achilles injury, should also play for the first time in a Miami uniform. Gase wants to be very careful with him, because the Dolphins are somewhat thin at the running back spot.
