COLLEGE BASKETBALL BETTING — UTAH STATE AGGIES AT UNLV

College Basketball Betting — Utah State Aggies at UNLV Rebels

UNLV -Rebels

There was a point in the season where the Aggies of Utah State ran off eleven victories in a row, and did so in an extremely prejudicial fashion, scoring those victories by an average of 25 points per game. That gives you an idea, maybe, of what they can do when they’re angry.

Now, Utah State, which is 12 – 5 straight up and 11 – 5 against the spread, has lost consecutive games to Colorado State and UNLV. In the Mountain West, teams are playing two-game sets against each other at the same location, and so the Aggies will try to get a little payback for Monday’s 59 – 56 loss, which represented a season-low in scoring. Wednesday night’s game against the UNLV Rebels begins at 11 p.m. Eastern time at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, and Fox Sports 1 will cover it. Utah State certainly had a lousy shooting night against UNLV, making just 33% of its shots. And that was a little out of character for the UNLV Rebels, who reside just within the nation’s top 200 when it comes to the Effective Field Goal Percentage they have allowed. So it might be expected that the Aggies will have a better night from the field.

UNLV certainly hopes it shoots better from inside the three-point arc than its woeful 7 for 31 effort, even in victory. They were fortunate to have made 13 triples, but as they say, you live by the three and die by the three, and the Rebels are going to have to shoot pretty well again.

In the college basketball odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, Utah State is laying some points:

One of the things that has characterized the Utah State team this season is its ability to really seal things up on the inside. It wouldn’t be a bold prediction to say that UNLV will not be able to sustain much of an attack in the lane. The Aggies have a human eraser in the person of Neemias Queta, the 7-foot Portuguese center who has been a shot-blocking machine lately, with 42 in his last eleven games. Utah State is ranked 6th in the nation in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency, and he’s shooting percentage they have allowed on two-point attempts (41.5%) is one of the big reasons why.

We would expect that if we are going to see an intense effort on the part of a Utah State team in payback mode, part of that will be to dominate the glass. Very few people get a second shot after missing the first; this team has hauled in 80% of rebounds on the defensive end.

With UNLV committed to playing a perimeter game anyway (42.5% of their points come that way), you’d have to feel really confident in their ability to shoot long range for them to have a chance here. At just below 35%, though, that is a shaky proposition at best. We are going to lay the points with Utah State and look for a very concentrated effort on Wednesday night.
